THE government is committed to increasing job placements for women.

Human Resources Minister Datuk Richard Riot Jaem said many programmes have been developed to increase the participation of women in the workforce to 55 per cent by 2020.

“1Azam helps women start small businesses to boost their income.

“From January to August last year, out of 25,544 1Azam participants, 16,470, or 64 per cent of them, were women,” he said in reply to a question posed by Zuraida Kamaruddin (PKR-Ampang).

“The Statistics Department showed that as of December last year, 7,519 women who were part of the programme secured a place in the workforce. These women comprised 44.7 per cent of the 16,821 people in the programme.”

Riot said the Azam Niaga (business) aid, under the 1Azam programme, formed by the Women, Family and Community Development Ministry, had benefited 2,322 single mothers.
