“State Government to blame for BR1M fiasco”
State Gerakan Youth chief Oh Teong Keong claimed the incident had caused inconvenience to recipients, mostly the sick and the poor.
He said the aid was scheduled to be distributed on May 10 at the ground floor foyer but State Welfare Committee chairman Phee Boon Poh had forced the event to be moved.
After the issue was highlighted, Phee said the organisers themselves had applied to use the hall on the first floor, and the state had not forced them to move there.
In response, Oh alleged Phee had abused his power by causing the state secretariat to halt the use of the foyer on the ground floor.
“The welfare department had always distributed federal and state aid at the foyer without any problem for years,” Oh said.
“The welfare department and some other NGOs do not need to pay and merely need to advise the complex management of their intention to use the foyer,” he added.
He said the welfare department was forced to use the crammed and unsuitable offices on the ground floor and first floor to distribute some 1,000 vouchers to the handicapped, the sick and the poor.
He called on Phee to resign from his post and apologise to the people of Penang.
