The government is mulling giving more direct cash transfers under the Bantuan Rakyat 1 Malaysia (BR1M) programme as more Malaysians are starting to feel the pinch from a bleak global economic outlook.

Deputy Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin was reported by Bernama to have mooted the idea at a Cabinet meeting yesterday.

The federal government had handed out RM500 in cash aid under BR1M earlier in the year in a bid to help reduce the rising cost of living.

Prime Minister Dato’ Sri Haji Mohammad Najib bin Tun Haji Abdul Razak had also said the government may carry out BR1M again, depending on the availability of funds.
