The government is scheduled to launch on Jan 29 the construction of houses for eligible flood victims in Kuala Krai, Kelantan, said Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak said tonight.

He said the government was working on the design of the new houses, which would serve as the model of houses to be built for flood victims who lose their homes to floods.

“We are working on the design of these new houses. God willing, on Jan 29, I will launch the construction of the houses in Kuala Krai, Kelantan. They will serve as the model for such houses,” he said in an interview on the ‘Soal Jawab’ programme aired by TV3 tonight.

Najib said the floods that struck recently, especially in the east coast states, were serious and had caused much hardship to the people.

“I was saddened when I toured the flood-hit areas. The devastation was much worse than what I have seen.

“As such, the government will undertake to help the flood victims, either in terms of cash, the quantum of which we have announced, or by way of building houses for those who have lost their homes,” he said.

Najib said the floods caused much damage to infrastructure, including schools, hospitals, mosques, bridges and community halls, with the loss running up to RM2.9 billion.

In the interview, the prime minister acknowledged the aid provided by the private sector, government-linked companies and individuals to ease the burden of the flood victims.
