Penghulus (village headmen) have been urged to work with enforcement officers from the Ministry of Domestic Trade, Cooperatives and Consumerism (KPDNKK) to check indiscriminate hiking of price of goods.

Its Deputy Minister Datuk Seri Ahmad Bashah Mohd Hanipah said this was because the more-than 750 headmen in the country who had been appointed as assistant KPDNKK enforcers were more aware of matters relating to traders in their areas.

He said they could report the matter to KPDNKK enforcers if traders who increased their prices ignored their advice not to do so.

“Besides, it is better that these headmen showed us the traders who lied in their weights, smuggle petrol, and increase the price of goods so that stern action could be taken to curtail their unhealthy business activities.

“The headmen could also provide information on the complaints made by the public about prices after the price of petrol was reduced,” he said after officiating a briefing on the role and powers of the KPDNKK with village headmen at Alor Setar yesterday
